Empowering Growth: My Favorite YouTube Videos for Therapy Clients

Writer: Melissa Londry, LPCMelissa Londry, LPC

As a licensed professional counselor, I’m always looking for creative and engaging ways to supplement the therapeutic process. One of the most accessible resources I recommend to my clients is YouTube. With its vast library of videos, YouTube offers valuable tools for self-care, understanding emotions, and personal growth.

Below, I’ve curated a list of my favorite YouTube videos to support your mental health journey. These videos are chosen with intention to help you feel more empowered, grounded, and informed.

1. Managing Stress and Anxiety

Why I Recommend It: This video guides you through progressive muscle relaxation, a technique that helps release tension and reduce anxiety. By intentionally tensing and relaxing muscle groups, you’ll feel calmer and more connected to your body. It’s a go-to for clients who struggle with racing thoughts or overwhelming stress.

2. Mindfulness and Meditation

Why I Recommend It: Mindfulness is a cornerstone of mental wellness, and this guided meditation is perfect for both beginners and experienced practitioners. It teaches you to focus on the present moment, helping to reduce emotional reactivity and cultivate inner peace.

3. Understanding Emotions

Why I Recommend It: This video breaks down the concept of the “window of tolerance,” a framework that explains how we respond to stress and trauma. It’s a powerful visual aid for clients working on emotional regulation and self-awareness.

4. Building Resilience

Why I Recommend It: Resilience is the ability to bounce back from challenges, and this video explains the science behind it in an easy-to-understand way. It’s a great resource for anyone looking to build inner strength and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

5. EMDR and Trauma Recovery

Why I Recommend It: For clients exploring Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), this video offers a straightforward explanation of how EMDR can help process trauma. It’s a useful introduction for those curious about this transformative therapy.

6. Embracing Vulnerability

Why I Recommend It: Brené Brown’s powerful TED Talk on vulnerability explores how embracing our imperfections leads to greater connection, courage, and authenticity. This video is especially impactful for clients working on self-acceptance, overcoming shame, or building healthier relationships. Her relatable and humorous delivery makes complex emotional concepts easy to understand and apply.

7. Motivation and Self-Compassion

Why I Recommend It:Self-compassion is vital for healing and growth. Dr. Neff’s video introduces practical strategies to foster kindness towards yourself, even in the face of setbacks or self-doubt. It’s like a warm hug in video form.

How to Use These Videos

I encourage you to watch these videos with an open mind and reflect on how their messages resonate with your current experiences.
